With our monthly mail synopsis complied by dedicated daughter-in-law Emma, last month came a renewal for our annual boat registration. Now up to $428 pa. A yachtie and fellow occupant at Constitution Dock suggested registering Zofia in Tasmania instead. The Marine and Safety Tasmania (MAST) office was only a few hundred metres along the waterfront so I went to investigate. What I learned is that registration is $70 pa and there is a single renewal date for all boats - 31st December a bit like horse birthdays. For an extra once only fee of $100 we could retain our existing boat registration number if not already in local use. Looking good!
We didn't hesitate, and we didn't need to be Tasmanian residents now or in the future. "Tell all your friends!" said the helpful lady at the counter. Did I tell you that I walked straight up to the counter too: no queue. WOW. It's not Liberia but this will certainly be a Tassie registered boat from now on.
It looks like it's not just the GST that's sneaking to Tassie.
Sounds too good to be true???
