Supercalafragalistic Maryborough

Little did we know that Mary Poppins was authored by PL Travers and that she was born in Maryborough. The locals are pretty proud of it and host an annual Mary Poppins Festival midyear and remember her with a statue and a street renamed 'Cherry Tree Lane' too.

It didn't take long to discover multiple delights in the heritage precinct of Maryborough. Getting about on foot allowed us to get a great feel for the place. Not worrying about the boat and tender etc made any trip ashore pain free.

A huge investment in streetscapes to compliment the large number of heritage buildings, indicates the City's determination to create some tourism possibilities. The former prosperity of the district is undeniable and it's fabulous to see a place so unspoiled by 'modernisation'.

During the early years of settlement 100's of single people arrived here by ship to seek their fortune in the town. This whimsical device was intended to provide advice on the suitability of a romantic match.

The memorial in the background commemorates the shipbuilding that occurred here. 31 ships commissioned by the Royal Australian Navy, were built at the local Walkers shipyards. The yard closed in 1974 ending a proud and productive era.
