This reminded me that I'll be missing my annual Book Club week-end on Rottnest Island with The Gals this week-end. The first one I'll miss after 15 years, I think. Just 20 minutes on a high speed ferry from Fremantle and you can be transported to another world and your luggage delivered to you accommodation. No hold-ups like security checks, passport, immigration etc... you can be in holiday mode from the minute you arrive at the ferry terminal. The weather, once you're on the island can be quite different from the mainland; in the winter it's usually warmer due to the warm Leeuwin Current. Even in the teeth of winter it is possible to swim in the clear azure water accented by the whitest of quartz sand. With its rugged naturalness and lack of traffic (there are no vehicles save a few buses and service vehicles) the modes of transport are chiefly foot and bicycle. Once the ferries depart with the day visitors, the Island settles to a gentle rhythm. Kicking back with a glass of wine watching the moon rise over Perth city 20nm away and in the company of dear, dear friends is a guilty pleasure.
Goofing around on the wharf with Marg, Mary and Jen
We love Rottnest and it's still the yardstick the Bloke and I use to gauge all the places we've been. It's a Boaters heaven with lots of anchorages big and small, most with moorings. We've visited and stayed onshore and we've sailed there lots of times too.
North facing chalets overlooking Geordie Bay
Thompsons Bay can get pretty busy in summer and anything 'holiday'.

Joy and Kathy ready for a ride to West End? (Vlamingh Point)
Have a fabulous week-end Gals! I'll be with you in spirit and the Bloke will be glad that he has me in another seaside location all to himself!
