It seems to us that Penguins are to Penneshaw what Pelicans are to American River - a favourite avian attraction. A retired fisherman we met with over 30 years of memories around Kangaroo Island informed us that there were once a huge number of penguins; so much so, that they created quite a disturbance at night. Where were they now? In his view they'd fallen prey to New Zealand fur seals whose numbers and presumably bellies too, had grown in recent times. This has a familiar ring to it. There is also new colony of these seals in Port Vincent where 5 seals act as gate keepers to any fish attempting to come in of out of the Marina. Here disappointed local anglers contemplated a new seal 'food additive' while tending their limp fishing rods - lead pellets! What will surely follow the seals will in all probability be the apex predator - sharks!

We heard that private Penguin Tour operators are very pragmatic. If penguins are replaced by seals, the tour will be re-badged to Seal Tours and can occur during the day. Commerce, like nature, hates a vacuum.
