Auditions for 'extras' were conducted in the town on Saturday and the number of people fronting up varied depending on to whom we spoke. A figure between 500 and 800 is by any measure a large number of people to suddenly lob into a place that is so small that it doesn't even have a petrol station! The town's population effectively doubled for the day.
The auditions took place in the Town Hall.
Stanley has many physical assets including 2 significant beaches that face in different directions, a hilly terrain giving an amphitheatre effect and it's magnificent 143m high 'Nut', a strange geological feature that is the remnant of a volcanic plug. It's built environment is largely unspoilt from the 1920's which is why it was chosen as a filming location for a part of the soon to be produced 'Light Between Oceans'. The locals have been kept busy preparing. A small timber jetty in a 'between wars' style has even been recreated in preparation.
Another beautiful Anzac memorial and quite similar to the one we'd seen in Portland except that this digger's head was only tilted downward and not sideways as well.
The beautifully painted Stanley pub.
The Museum.
Skyline of shops and a folly resembling both a mill without wind blades and a lighthouse.
1920's cottages with the 'Nut' as a backdrop.
This former bank building is now an art gallery.
This is now a boutique hotel.
A variety of traditional building materials
The Star of the Sea Church
We were lucky enough to have a little wander around ahead of the influx
of people and again after they'd left. The day before the auditions
there was an palpable air of anticipation. On audition day, there were a
few locals that seemed a bit put off by the crowds and fuss but once it was all over, a lovely calm returned to the township.
