Knowing that the annual Tulip Festival was on in October, in fact the same weekend that we were in Stanley made our next stop to Wynyard pretty much a 'no brainer'. Sure, we'd miss the actual festival and it may even be a much bigger and more fun filled event than the Nannup Tulip Festival in WA, but we could live without all those shenanigans. What we really wanted to see were the brightly striped paddocks. Give or take a week, the blooms would surely be just as good. By hook or by crook we'd get up to Table Cape and feast our eyes.
The
Van Diemen Quality Bulbs tulip farm is located on the top of Table Cape, another volcanic outcrop with incredible soils. (Do check their site as their promotional photos are so much better than these!). The plowed red-brown paddocks are visible out to sea. The soil must be incredibly rich. This is a very successful operation and we are told that some of the tulips are even sent to Holland!
Seeing as we were out on Tape Cape we thought we'd have a closer look at the lighthouse we'd seen from the ocean the day before. Is this becoming a habit?
As we arrived two groups who were clearly traveling together in identical camper vans, drove off with unexpected haste. Had they perhaps realised that they had shocking campervan etiquette and were escaping in sheer shame? The white items festooned in the rear window were XXL UNDERPANTS!!
On the track from Table Cape lighthouse to the next headland.
View to the Inglis Rivermouth at Wynyard.
We may have missed the Tulip Festival but the streetscape was still bordered with fabulous plantings.
This tulip shaped seat; one of a pair, looks like a tulip until opened into a seat.
Make no mistake, Wynyard IS Tulip Town !
