Leg 52 - Jervis Bay to Kiama

A mixed bag of opinions had us tending to think that Port Hacking might be our next stop - the outskirts of Sydney no less! However, a call from our friends Martin and Carolyn to say they would be in Kiama for the week-end and why not join them for lunch/dinner on Saturday night, got us quite animated. Wow, we've been taunting them with our eventual visit to Sydney for a few years and Martin has been sending photos from exotic locations titled 'Your next Mooring' in return.

The Bloke dragged out the NSW cruising bible; Alan Lucas'  Cruising the New South Wales Coast. Conversations were had with locals. Names of contacts and advice exchanged. Kiama was considered tight but doable. We'd give it a go and from the photos on the web, it looks like a gem. Not only that but we might arrive on Friday night which as far as The Bloke is concerned, is 'fish and chip night' and on par with any Sausage Roll opportunity. But wait there's more. Where we were to tie up would be right next to the Fish and Chip shop. A golden opportunity like that does not need overthinking.

Heading out towards Point Perpendicular at 07:00

A brisk 20knot NW'r had us out of Jervis Bay and heading north in no time.

Looking south at the fast receding view of Bowen Is. at the south head of Jervis Bay.

We enjoyed a very satisfying run up the coast in 20-25knots of mostly westerly wind from our favoured quarter resulting in lots of 8-10knots on the Speed Over Ground gadget. Whoooo an average of 8knots for the day. It was thrilling.

On approach to Kiama we were surrounded by a pod of 'maybe' dolphins. Maybe because they were quite unlike other species we were used to seeing in size (biggest dolphins we'd even seen), colour (totally black) and their nose shape (completely blunt). They did behave a lot like dolphins, swimming up and around the boat but not necessarily riding the bow wave. We'll update the blog with photos/video once we've worked out what these creature were. It was very special being among them anyway.

View of the Kiama lighthouse with blowhole giving a small show at left.

Northern end of Kiama Bay with the ocean pool beneath the cliff.

View of the wharf where we were to moor.
Mmmm ... bonus spectators too.
The Bloke said "Last photo. Would the crew please pay attention!"
Yikes - looks scary. The fish and chips better be worth it.
