The Chip Mountains

There are a number of commodities that are loaded and shipped into and out of Portland Harbour. Bauxite obviously arrives to be dealt with by the Portland Aluminium smelter but the stuff that is on the go 24x7 is the delivery and the export of wood chips. We had earlier seen the vast pine plantations in the vicinity of Mt Gambier during our epic road trip with Verity. This is where the logs end up, although mostly chipped.

Trucks roll in night and day

One of  2 - 3 wood chip mountains.

Feeding the mountain

There are 2 ramps

Once in position, the driver gets out

The ramp begins to tilt

....And out it all pours in just a couple of minutes!

Here is another

There are 2 ramps on the go

Some of the plantation timber is exported as logs too

The log stockpile waiting to be taken onto the wharf.

The unloading of the woodchips was fascinating but then perhaps I'm easily amused!
