1. This Bay is lovely and boasts some of the bluest water and whitest squeaky beaches that you'd find anywhere. It's worth stopping in if you happen to be on the South Coast even if the locals are trying to keep the place a secret.
2. It's like the lyrics to Hotel California, '...you can check out any time you like but you can never leave'. It finds itself at the merge points of weather systems. Troughs and Lows will pop out here after running amok further north. Getting a favourable weather window to depart with can be difficult in our experience.
3. The Boat Harbour is behind a sheltering rock wall and has a jetty that has a water tap - probably the same bore water used through the town. Advice is against being alongside in the event of a heavy swell. The Harbour has a boat ramp. There is no space to anchor inside the Boat Harbour/Marina. Craig from the dive shop seems to act as an informal Harbour Master. Call on 08 98374 440 or 0427 374 440 for information regarding availability of a swing mooring.
4. Craig advised that if you choose to anchor near the Boat Harbour/Marina then the Marina end of the Back Beach is best. There are some rocks to be dodged. Even if they don't exist on your chart, they are clearly visible. The Boat Harbour/Marina is a long way from the townsite.
5. John Cove is a lovely anchorage and is not noticeably rolly unless there is a SW swell of 3m or more. We held and sheltered in almost 40kn gusts without problem or discomfort. John Cove is unsuitable in an Easterly or a Northerly. There are plenty of large sand patches for your anchor. There is a picnic park with barbeques, toilet block and rubbish bins. The caravan park is in walking distance where you can shower for $5:00 and use washing machines, dryers and washing lines with approval from management. The machines behind the office are the newest and cost $4:00 per wash. There are also older machines in other parts of the park costing between $2:20 and $3:00. Milk, frozen bread and bait can be purchased at the caravan park.
The General Store is also within striking distance. The range of items is limited and expensive and F&V for the week arrives on a Saturday morning. Alcohol and fuel can also be purchased from the General Store.
John Cove is essentially at the blocked Wellstead estuary and there are a number of excellent labelled walking trails and viewing platforms if exploring is your thing.
6. Peppermint Beach on the eastern side of the bay offers sanctuary from Easterlies, Northeasterlies and to some extent from a Southerly but not a Southwester or a Westerly. In the latter it becomes a surf beach. There are plenty of sand patches to drop the pick in.
I will probably update this later. That's it for now.
